I first started looking at a 2.5Gb appliance PC to move pfSense into, but then I saw someone suggest finding a used enterprise server with 10Gb ports for it instead. My fiber modem has a single 10Gb Ethernet port and four 1Gb ones, allowing me to use the faster port to pass the full bandwidth from my ISP (tops out at 1.7Gbps) to dedicated hardware for pfSense. When I switched ISPs last week I graduated to 1.5Gbps fiber, and my pfSense VM quickly proved to be a bottleneck, topping out around 450Mbps. This was plenty fast for the roughly 300Mbps cable modem I was connecting with. Until last week I've been running pfSense in a VMware Player VM on an always-on PC on my LAN.
